The Academy of Operational Medicine's fellowship program recognizes those individuals who have demonstrated their advanced practice of operational medicine through experience, education, scholarly activity, and leadership. Those selected for admission into the Academy and elected a Fellow may use the designation Fellow of the Academy of Operational Medicine and affix the professional credential FAOM to their name.

To apply for a fellowship, an applicant must have completed their educational and licensing requirements to become a Physician, Registered Nurse, Physician Associate, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist, Paramedic, Physical Therapist, Dentist, Veterinarian, Pharmacist or international equivalents; have at least three years of professional practice in their medical discipline, and have verifiable experience in the field of operational medicine. The strongest candidates are those with military, disaster, law enforcement, wilderness, or missionary medical experiences. However, the Academy broadly defines operational medicine and encourages each applicant who believes they are eligible for a fellowship to apply.

EMTs with advanced medical training, such as military, law enforcement, and search and rescue, are encouraged to apply.

The Academy defines operational medicine as the practice of medicine in unconventional, hostile, or austere environments where access to critical resources is severely limited. Membership in the Academy is not a requisite for publication and does not influence editorial decisions.

JOM accepts manuscripts for consideration that have not been published elsewhere and are not simultaneously under consideration by any other publication. Original research articles undergo blinded peer review and will be published within three months of submission if accepted. JOM is published on a continuous basis with no fees for readers or authors.
